Tip #8 of the UFit Nutrition Atlas: Healthy fats are good
For many years, we have been concerned with eating “low fat” and “no fat” food products and replacing fat with chemicals. All this to say, we want you eating healthy fats and staying away from junk food fat.
Fats have a crucial role in our body processes. Without fats, Vitamins A, D, E, and K would have no chance of being absorbed by our bodies. They require fat as assistance to enter our cells. In order to maintain appropriate hormone function and radiant hair and skin, you need fat in your diet. The layer of fat allows us to regulate body temperature and protect our bodies. There is a difference between needing blue whale blubber and enough fat to help with thermoregulation. You don’t need enough to swim in the Northern Atlantic!
Mono-saturated fats are the most important and most beneficial. These fats help with lowering LDL (the bad cholesterol) in your blood stream. You can find mono-saturated fats in nuts, avocados, olive oil, eggs, cold water fish, and more.
Trans fats are what get many people in trouble. This is the junk food fat we were talking about. These are often found in processed foods that we ultimately want you to stay away from. Instead, choose the whole food option which will give you the appropriate types of fats that are great for your body.
This doesn’t mean we want you to eat a bunch of fat with every meal. You need these healthy fats in moderation. Try adding a few nuts to your snack, or an avocado to your salad. Just don’t go crazy!
