Tip #1 of the UFit Nutrition Atlas: Quit counting calories

Let’s be real here. Our society has been counting calories for far too long. This may lead to success, but it often leads to us living manic-filled lives with lots of math and hunger. This is not the answer to healthy living.

Without diving into the science of it too far, let’s discuss what happens when your caloric intake is lowered. This generally creates a tremendous amount of stress on your body, causing it to enter a state of starvation. To retaliate, a plethora of hormones are released telling your body to stubbornly hold on, slowing down your metabolism.

As you can see, this method is unsustainable. Starving yourself or stressing your body will not lead you to wellness or good nutrition. When the numbers are the emphasis, the nutrients in our food become secondary and this my friends, is dangerous. When your food is packed full of nutrients, you are winning. The “boxed carbs” in the center of our grocery stores are far too often limited in the nutrients our bodies’ desire. Colorful vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbs answer the call of our body’s cells. Our bodies know what to do with these products and you will get maximum digestion and absorption of these essential nutrients. No more math, no more hunger!

So quit stressing about counting calories. Start eating nutrient dense foods. Make the right choices and toon in for more next week on how to better your nutrition!
